Yoga for healing trauma has been a hot topic in the yoga world recently, and rightly so, according to Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D., the author of New York Times bestseller The Body Keeps the Score - Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma.

This book has been on my bookshelf for about 2 years now with very good intentions of starting to grow my understanding of trauma and how yoga can play an important part in healing. I have attempted to read this book many times, but usually just end up looking at the table of contents and then reading a short section which may be of particular interest at the time. This book is very technical and science based, which is a good thing, but it makes for difficult reading.

I recently came across an amazing podcast that really helped me start to put the pieces together and dissect this book a bit more. If you have been wanting to learn more about the power of yoga in healing trauma (or really, just about being human), please give season 1 of this podcast a listen - it contains some really valuable information, presented in a way we can all understand.

The podcast, Somatic Self Care, is co-hosted by one of my favorite anatomy nerds, Mary Richards, and restorative yoga lover, Lizzie Lasater. The first season of their podcast discusses the book The Body Keeps the Score. There are 14 episodes - one episode covers the book and then the next episode introduces a practice for somatic self care.

I admit, I still have not read the book, but I know I will come back to season 1 of this podcast and maybe actually follow along with the book next time.

If you are interested in getting on the mat and doing something good for your body, your mind and your heart, we would love to see you at The Space Wellness Center for one of our Restorative yoga classes, Yoga Nidra classes or our new Somatic Yoga class which starts on Friday, November 4th.
